Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new manager and the move certainly has Pep Guardiola’s backing.

Guardiola is busy preparing for the Champions League final against Inter Milan this coming weekend.

Yet he was always going to be asked about Postecoglou given their ties within the City Football Group.

Postecoglou was the manager of Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan, one of the City Football Group clubs, before heading to Celtic in 2021.

That means Guardiola is familiar with Postecoglou and he has now moved to hail Tottenham’s new boss.

Guardiola has told Sky Sports that he thinks Postecoglou is ‘absolutely’ a good move for Tottenham as he is a simply ‘exceptional’ manager.

Guardiola opened up on a meeting with Postecoglou in Japan, admitting that the pair had an ‘interesting chat’ back then.

The Spaniard predicts that Postecoglou will be an ‘incredible job’ at Tottenham before joking that hopefully his side can finally score a goal away at Spurs.

“Absolutely, another exceptional manager is coming,” said Guardiola. “I was lucky to meet him in Tokyo years ago, when was manager of Yokohama, one of our clubs in the City Football Group. It was an interesting chat.”

“He will do an incredible job at Spurs and hopefully we can score one goal away,” he added.

Manchester City reportedly like Ange Postecoglou

There is no manager in the world City would trade Pep Guardiola for right now.

We do sometimes see rumours about a departure though; after all, Guardiola is now seven years into the City job.

Whoever takes over from Guardiola down the line will have a tough task on their hands and some had wondered whether it could be Postecoglou.

Journalist Rory Smith claimed in 2022 that people at City rate Postecoglou incredibly highly and think he is ‘really, really good’.

Smith suggested that whilst Postecoglou to City was a long shot, the Australian is hugely popular with decision-makers at the Etihad Stadium.

We will now see Postecoglou and Guardiola lock horns in the Premier League, with Tottenham fans no doubt hoping that he can become the latest manager to claim a home win over City.
