Lockwood & Co. and 6 good Netflix shows canceled in 2023

Netflix has renewed several original series in 2023, including The Night Agent, The Diplomat, and Ginny & Georgia. Sadly, there are a few Netflix shows that the streamer decided not to renew for additional seasons.

Netflix has renewed several original series in 2023, including The Night Agent, The Diplomat, and Ginny & Georgia. Sadly, there are a few Netflix shows that the streamer decided not to renew for additional seasons.

For over a decade now, Netflix has been one of the top dogs in the world of television streaming, regularly funneling out original content and licensing older shows and movies. While Netflix has produced many hits, they’ve also put out a lot of duds. And then there are the shows that are lost somewhere in the middle, never really given a chance to prove their worth because Netflix axed them too soon.

It has become a running joke among fans that Netflix cancels just about everything after only a season or two. The Netflix shows on this list were among the most recent to fall prey to the streaming service’s infamous cancellation curse.

This supernatural teen drama became a surprise critical hit for Netflix when it debuted in January. Netflix has always been a bit hit-or-miss when it comes to its teen shows, but Lockwood & Co. is genuinely good. Based on the book series by Jonathan Stroud, the series follows a teen psychic who teams up with two boys at a ghost-hunting agency in London. Sadly, the series didn’t generate enough views for Netflix to renew. However, Lockwood & Co. still managed to find a loyal fanbase currently overseeing a campaign to save the series.

A spinoff to the Netflix teen drama series On My Block, Freeridge was a fun teen comedy-drama series that only got one short season before Netflix swiftly canceled the show in April. The writing was kind of on the wall with this one because it received very little promotion from Netflix and came and went without much fanfare.

But given its short runtime and relatively unknown cast, it couldn’t have been that expensive to produce. If Netflix had marketed the show better and allowed it the chance to find a fanbase, it might have grown into something as special as its predecessor.

Even though it premiered in November 2022, Netflix did not officially cancel this multilingual epic from the Dark creators until January 2023. It was a big disappointment to fans, not only because the show ended with a huge twist and cliffhanger but because it felt like a disservice to the show itself. It took time for Dark to build a loyal fanbase and genuinely fascinating mythos. Unfortunately, Netflix didn’t give 1899 a chance to do the same.

Bling Empire and its spinoff Blinge Empire: New York are standard reality television content, and we don’t necessarily need more reality TV, but these shows were a lot of fun to watch. Sometimes all you want is a silly series like this to take your mind off of whatever is happening in your real life. The parent series was better and had a stronger cast than the New York version, but it’s still a shame Netflix decided to ax both of these shows in one fell swoop.

This endearing animated series from Hamish Steele felt like a breath of fresh air when it premiered on Netflix last summer. We were lucky enough to get a second season, but sadly Steele later confirmed that Netflix had canceled the show. It’s especially unfortunate because Dead End: Paranormal Park had a very inclusive cast featuring a gay, transgender teen. Now, more than ever, we could really use more positive trans representation on television. It would have been nice to see Barney, Norma, and the rest of the gang’s adventures continue.

Uncoupled is the outlier on this list because even though Netflix canceled the Darren Star comedy series in January 2023, almost six months after it premiered in July 2022, Showtime swooped in and rescued the Neil Patrick Harris-led show just one month after it was canned.

The second season was supposed to begin filming in May 2023, though things might change due to the ongoing WGA strike. Netflix removed the first season from its platform on May 1. It has already been moved to Showtime, and the second season will probably premiere in 2024.
