Tony Khan speaks about Cody Rhodes’ departure from AEW

Tony Khan explained why he did not pick up Cody Rhodes’ option during a recent media call. He could have extended his contract with the company, but he didn’t want to keep someone who didn’t want to be there. Here’s what the AEW owner had to say:

“I don’t want to get too deep into it, because a lot of this is personal between me and him. But, I tried to reach a longer agreement with him, beyond what we had for the option years,” he said. “And it sounded like at one point I think we were going to, honestly. When we couldn’t settle on it, the last thing I wanted to do was keep somebody here that isn’t going to want to be here.“

Tony further said that he has a lot of respect for Cody Rhodes and will always continue to. He had figured out that things wouldn’t work for them in a long term and he say Cody’s release coming. These were his words:

“So, it didn’t look like we were going to get a longer deal done, and I would have loved to have done it, and I have a lot of respect for him. But, when we didn’t come to terms with that it made it pretty clear where we were going to end up on things. That being said, I have said nothing but respectful stuff about Cody, and I will continue to.”

Update on Cody’s WWE return

While the conflict between Cody Rhodes and WWE is far from finished, it is a case of waiting and seeing how things unfold. WWE believed they had the former AEW Executive Vice President, but they are currently unsure.
From the moment he departed All Elite Wrestling, there have been conflicting reports about the former three-time TNT Champion. Cody Rhodes has yet to make a public statement on his future plans in wrestling, or if he intends to retire from the sport entirely. At this time, it’s unclear whether he’ll be returning to WWE.
