Tammy Abraham scored a winner in extra time as Bristol City beat league one Scunthorpe 2-1 in the League Cup.

Abraham came on as a second half substitute and settled the game in the 96th minute as he netted his fourth goal in six games, after being set up by Lee Tomlin and Mark Little.

The Championship side had led through Bobby Reid before Josh Morris pulled Scunthorpe back with a penalty after Stephen Dawson was penalised, but it was Chelsea loanee, Abraham who sent City through to the third round of the cup for only the second time in 12 seasons.

It was only what City deserved after they dominated the tie for long periods. With 59% possession and 30 shots on goal, 11 on target, it was a performance manager Johnson will have been pleased with.

The Bristol City website reported that Johnson told Bristol City Player HD: “I’m really pleased with how we played tonight, some of our football was excellent. We should’ve probably come away having won the game after 90 minutes and I was disappointed to have to go to extra time.

“Then it becomes tough, but I thought our fitness was good and the substitutes did well when they came on. You have to respect the opposition for the fact that they were working their socks off. At one point it looked like they were tiring, but then they came good again.

“They had a little spell, which led to the penalty, and we had to make sure we wrestled back the balance of play. We did that through some really good passing and moving. We know Lee Tomlin’s quality and we know about Tammy Abraham’s sharp movement – he should’ve probably had three goals after he came on.”
